EG&G Computer Technician Job Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This position may have incumbents performing duties at levels N5, N6, or N7. Duties at each level vary in complexity, technicality, level of responsibility, supervision, and skill/knowledge requirements. As a minimum, the incumbents performing duties at any level must demonstrate experience in IS management or computer information systems administration, strong technical knowledge, ability to work with people of varied backgrounds and myriad objectives. In addition, incumbents performing duties at each level must possess the following respective qualifications:

Level N5

High School Diploma or equivalent + 2 years directly related experience (equivalent specialized education or Vo-Tech training may substitute for experience).

Level N6

High School Diploma or equivalent + 4 years directly related experience (equivalent specialized education or Vo-Tech training may substitute for experience).

Level N7

High School Diploma or equivalent + 6 years directly related experience (equivalent specialized education or Vo-Tech training may substitute for experience).

Job Description :

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Level N5

1. Performs a combination of more simple and routine tasks necessary to assist technicians in installations and/or systems maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Gathering and compiling IS data from data sheets, work orders, or other documentation.
- Reviewing and following specific instruction for resolution to simple and more routine technical errors.
Performing standard tests on equipment or systems to determine. Troubleshooting and correcting basic IS or equipment failures during field tests, and correcting minor problems. Generally refers more complex issues to upper level technicians.
- Assisting in IS installation and maintenance activities by compiling data related to system requirements, specifications, and materials which are pertinent to maximizing system utilization. Such duties require the application of basic technical knowledge to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in system requirements.
2. Performs a combination of administrative duties necessary to assist technicians in efficiently installing and maintaining information systems.
3. Provide support as requested for the Network Administrator. Support is under direct supervision at all times.
4. Assists internal customers as needed to gather and coordinate the utilization of systems and software capabilities to generate reports or other technical documents.
5. Supports the TOCDF safety culture by performing all duties in accordance with the below listed safety responsibilities and enforcing a safe work environment.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Level N6

1. Performs a combination of both N5 duties and more non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, using technical precedents which are not fully applicable. Duties are designed to complete systems, related installations, and maintenance activities. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Applying conventional IS practices to develop, prepare, or recommend schematics, changes, specifications, system requirements, and parts/components lists.
- Conducting tests or systems reviews on designs or functional requirements in an effort to maximize systems capabilities. Such duties require selection and adaptation/modification of a wide variety of technical knowledge and well developed expertise in more than one system and their technical interactions.
- Reviewing problems of significant complexity and coordinating with internal and external agencies and vendors to resolve system operational problems. Generally refers more complex tasks to upper level technicians for resolution.
2. Reviews proposed equipment or systems requests and determining appropriateness and feasibility of such requests. Makes recommendations to management on perceived unnecessary requests.
3. Supports the Network Administrator in managing Network. Performs routine and non-routine Network tasks in accordance with established procedures. Tasks can include establishing profiles, changing security, and backing up servers.
4. Assists internal customers as needed to gather and coordinate the utilization of systems and software capabilities to generate reports or other technical documents.
5. Supports the TOCDF safety culture by performing all duties in accordance with the below listed safety responsibilities and enforcing a safe work environment.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Level N7

Performs a combination of all N5 and N6 level duties, as well as assignments of unique and complex variety involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project or relatively wide scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse system. Duties are designed to assist technicians in completing complex designs, and/or maintaining major systems. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Applying conventional IS practices to develop, prepare, or recommend major schematic, designs, systems, and parts/components changes.
- Applying conventional IS practices to develop, prepare, or construct major units, systems, or equipment.
- Conducting tests or experiments on major systems designs. Such duties require selection and adaptation/modification of a unique and critical tests, equipment, systems, and procedures.
2. Checks and analyzes equipment requests to determine adequacy of such requests.
3. Assists internal customers as needed to gather and coordinate the utilization of systems and software capabilities to generate reports or other technical documents.
4. Reviews proposed equipment or systems to ensure that such proposals are feasible and comply with established requirements, regulations, and procedures.
5. Supports the TOCDF safety culture by performing all duties in accordance with the below listed safety responsibilities and enforcing a safe work environment.
6. Independently performs a variety of Network support functions of a non-routine nature. These functions can include moving databases between servers, analyzing usage to determine long-term changes in structure, working with Programming and Database Administrators, and performing systematic changes.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
